An interesting post on Travel Words gives us the history of the famous English post box, with photos of a remarkable number of examples. Jude invites us to share our own images, so here are a few I have.

Post boxes, old GPO, Sydney

London pillar box in the snow
The next photo is not so much a post box as an entire post office. This is the “Galapagos Post Office” on the island of Floreana. Originally the barrel was used by whalers and other sailors, who would leave letters for people at home; the letters would be picked up and delivered by other sailors heading in that direction. Nowadays, the post office is used only by tourists.

Not so much a post box as an entire post office!
I think you bloody get around, Kaz ! 🙂

Like Stringer and me, your travels have got you where you are, financially speaking. But were they worth it, or what ?! 🙂

As I get older, and realise I will always have to live in shabby rental units and will have insufficient retirement funds because all my money for 20 years went on travel … sometimes, no, I don’t think the travels were worth it. 😦

Not always. Look into organizations like mine – City West Housing – for your (much) later years …

I shall try to remember that when those (much) later years have passed. 😉 Though when I stop working I do intend to move somewhere farther north, where it’s warmer! I shall be a Queenslander. 🙂

Ah. Well, you won’t have any chance to get into assisted housing if you move inter-State. Life is about priorities, eh ? 🙂

Wow! These are wonderful. Love the story of the Galapagos post office and I particularly like the angle of the boxes in Sydney – the franked mail box brings back memories from when I was a junior clerk!

I must confess I’m not really sure what “franked” means! I like how the Brasso is built up in the crevices of those mail boxes.

Franked mail is mail that goes through a franking machine and is ‘stamped’ or ‘franked’ It’s the mail you receive without a proper stamp.

As so often, the conversations en route waylay me and I forget what I’ve come to say! 🙂 Ah, yes- postboxes… intriguing mix from shiny new to… not 🙂

I find that too — I read other comments and forget my own. Funnily, since posting this I’ve noticed some more interesting ones around Sydney I could have included.
