What caught my eye about these two cats was how well cared for they looked, which is not exactly common in Fiji where cats are generally scrawny and rough looking. Then I spotted how alert the one cat is, in contrast to the black one that is fast asleep!

Square Sky 20: Tropical sunset

Palm trees, water, beach umbrella, stunning sunset.
What more do you need for the perfect Fiji sunset? (Ooh, I know, a cocktail!)
Square Sky 13: Tropical island

A Fijian island on the horizon with a perfect sky above.
Isn’t this just the ideal tropical island view? Shot from the tall ship ‘Tenacious’ in June 2016.

Square Sky 8: Golden glow

Heavy grey clouds with a glow of light.
A golden glow below the gloomy clouds across the bay in Suva, Fiji.

Defunct fountains: Fiji

Only the legs are left!
In Suva (the capital of Fiji), there is a lovely garden named in honour of Sir John Bates Thurston, governor between February 1888 and March 1897. While the lawns, trees and plants are well looked after, the monuments and fountains have had a tougher time. This fountain must have been very impressive when it was new and the basin was full of water. I can imagine children running through the water on a hot day, splashing each other and laughing with glee.

Defunct, decrepit, destroyed …
The view from the window: Tenacious in Fiji

Tenacious through the window of a church in Daliconi, Fiji
This is the second post in an occasional series called “The view from the window” — and, coincidentally, it features the same ship as in the first post! Daliconi is a small village in the Exploring Isles in Fiji, and was badly hit by Hurricane Winston in February this year.
The Hand Slap Game

Hand Slap on the beach, Fiji
I took this photo on my recent Fiji sailing holiday. We had visited the remote village of Daliconi on the island of Vanua Baluva, and were sitting around on the beach waiting for the boats to take us back to the ship. One of my shipmates introduced some of the children to the Hand Slap Game (also apparently known as red hands, slapsies, slap jack, red tomato or slaps). I wanted to capture the contrasts in their hands — large and small, white and brown, be-ringed and plain, clean and sandy.
