Square Sky 18: Mauna Kea

One of the observatories perched atop Mauna Kea.

When you can look down on the tops of clouds, you’re usually in a plane. Unless you’re on Mauna Kea, 4207 m (13,802 ft) above sea level on the island of Hawaii. “With its high elevation, dry environment, and stable airflow, Mauna Kea’s summit is one of the best sites in the world for astronomical observation. Since the creation of an access road in 1964, thirteen telescopes funded by eleven countries have been constructed at the summit. The Mauna Kea Observatories are used for scientific research across the electromagnetic spectrum and comprise the largest such facility in the world.” (source) Tourists, though, are generally more interested in the sunsets-and-stargazing tours.

Square Sky 17: Bondi sunrise

A new day dawns.

I’ve lived at Bondi Beach for 6 years in total, and this is the first sunrise I’ve seen there. I do sometimes wake up long before the sky begins to lighten and am unable to go back to sleep (I hate that!), and I often think I should get up and go down to the beach and watch the sunrise, but I never do. Today, though, I couldn’t help thinking it would make a good entry for Becky’s Square Sky challenge. It was actually quite lovely on the beach at 5am — only a handful of people (including this young man doing his “greet the morning” routine) and colour seeping into the sky. When I left at 6am, the sun was well up and there were hundreds of people, exercising and running and swimming and surfing.

But to be honest, I would have preferred to still be asleep.

Square Sky 12: A grey dawn breaking

A gloomy day at sea begins.

“a grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking”
from Sea Fever by John Masefield

I wouldn’t want you to get the impression that every “sunrise” at sea is like the one in yesterday’s post! This is in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand, also taken while sailing on ‘Lord Nelson’.
